Bob Gordon - A Man of Action

On May 19, 2003, Bob Gordon was honored by Action for Post-Soviet Jewry with a Gala Reception and Dessert at Temple Emanuel, Newton, for his more than 30 years as a Soviet Jewry activist.  Bob was a founder of Action for Soviet Jewry, and he served on its Board for many years.

Professor Steve Whitfield (Prof. of American Studies, Brandeis University) spoke of the early days of Soviet Jewry activism and his trip to visit the Katz family in Moscow. Morey Schapira, co-founding president of Action for Soviet Jewry, spoke of the long history of significant battles fought and won on behalf of  and by Soviet Jews.  Morey moved to California in 1977, so was only with us for the very early years of ASJ.
Michail Pankratov, an emigre from Moscow, was part of the group of refuseniks who Bob Gordon helped.  He spoke of what it meant to have the support of Bob during the difficult years as they waited to emigrate. Dr. Benjamin Sachs, Chairman of the JCRC Post-Soviet Jewry Committee and head of the Women's Clinic in Dnipropetrovsk, Ukraine.  He introduced Rabbi Shmuel Kaminezki from Dnipropetrovsk.

 

Rabbi Shmuel Kaminezki, Chief Rabbi of Dnipropetrovsk Region, brought greetings and thanks from the Dnipropetrovsk Jewish community for the work which Boston is doing to help them bring Jews back to their heritage. Barry Shrage, President of CJP, praised the efforts of the Boston Jewish community and Bob Gordon in helping our fellow Jews in other countries.

  Doris Gordon, wife of Bob Gordon, spoke about her experiences traveling with Bob and introduced his sons, who presented a short slide program on Bob and Soviet "Jewelry"
