Action For Post-Soviet Jewry

Medical Supplies, Pharmacy

We provide medical supplies for pensioners in the Jewish communities with which we work.

We encourage the participation of qualified physicians to hold free clinics for pensioners and to oversee the distribution of free medicine in their communities.

We help to stock a free clinic at a Kharkov, Ukraine, synagogue.

Our ability to help the Jewish communities in the former Soviet Union with medicine depends upon the help we receive from physicians and our supporters in the U.S.  Several physicians in the greater Boston area, and a few from other parts of the country, routinely donate sample medicines to us.  Many others contribute financially, which enables our office to purchase generic medicines to send to our physician contacts in the former Soviet Union.

The illnesses for which we provide medicine include high blood pressure, heart problems, high cholesterol, ulcers, diabetes, infections, allergy and asthma.  Many of our pensioners were diagnosed with serious disease, but unable to obtain medicine until our program came into play.  We have also supplied small medical items such as blood pressure cuffs, and meters and strips for monitoring the blood sugar of diabetics.

In addition, our funds have been used to purchase supplies for people who are entering the hospital for treatment, but are unable to afford what they need.  This can include suture materials, surgical tools, bandaging, medicine, linens and food for the duration of their stay.  Those who are scheduled for a hospital procedure, are handed a list from their physician of necessary supplies.  If they are unable to fulfill the whole list, they are not admitted to hospital.  The cost of items on these lists can run to $100 or more, an impossible amount for the unemployed or impoverished elderly.  The reason for this is the economic collapse of the state-run medical system, which has no money for even the most basic supplies.
